On 24 April 2013 over 200 people attended the annual Users’ Group Seminar at the ICE’s Headquarters in London. Marking the 20th anniversary of the ICE’s publication of the New Engineering Contract, the 2013 event also saw the launch of the April 2013 Edition suite of contracts.
Opening the event Peter Hansford, Chief Construction Advisor, called the NEC3 the ‘bible of UK public sector construction procurement’ and discussed the reasons for continued government support of the NEC3. A mixture of case studies on the use of the NEC3 in both build and facilities management environments followed including Neil Bradley of the ICC, Steve Hudson from IUK and Matthew Lugg of the Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme. It was highlighted over and over again that the basic principles of the NEC – of mutual trust and cooperation between the parties – leads to the majority of projects being completed on time and on budget.
Featuring a mixture of strategic direction, case studies, interactive workshops and panel session featuring key drafters of the NEC3, and devoted to the updates made to the NEC3 suite of contracts, rounded off the day, giving delegates went away with a great deal to think about.
