The NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) has been developed for the appointment of a contractor for engineering and construction project work, including any level of design responsibility. It provides a modern method for clients, designers, contractors and project managers to work collaboratively to achieve their objectives consistently.

This programme is designed to equip delegates with the skills necessary to be able to manage a project under an NEC4 Contract, with specific reference to role and importance of the Project Manager under the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC).

Under the ECC, the Client is represented by the Project Manager. Being a Project Manager is a skill in itself. Understanding a whole range of competing interests and balancing these against the need to deliver a high-quality project on time, to budget and to standard is a difficult task. Coupled with the legal, not to mention financial, implications of delivering a project incorrectly the task can seem quite daunting.

This training programme fuses together the skills required of a project manager with those technical skills required by the NEC. Taking delegates from project start up to project closure it will look at the procedures as described in the ECC, the purpose of those procedures and the implications for not following them correctly. It also ensures delegates are familiar with the interdependencies of the various documents required by the ECC.

Understanding the relationship between the Contract Data, the Programme, the Scope and a strong communication procedure is vital to the successful execution of any ECC project. In-depth knowledge of the process, terms, functions and interdependencies is the key to being a successful ECC Project Manager and the delegate will have the opportunity on this training programme to understand not just what those processes are, but why they should be followed to achieve a successful outcome.

Dealing with crucial issues such as time, quality, cost, risk, compensation events and early warnings, this training programme will give delegates opportunities to work through both contract based and non-contract based scenarios with the intention of equipping them with key tools needed in any ECC project role.

Successful completion of this training programme will enable a delegate to describe themselves as an accredited NEC4 Project Manager with specific reference to the ECC.  The delegate will be able to demonstrate the key processes crucial to the NEC4 and how to apply them to an ECC Project. There will be reference to common NEC processes and application, but this training programme is specifically intended to be used on projects.

This training course starts at 09:00 and finishes at 17:00. Regular breaks are scheduled throughout the day with a longer break in the afternoon for lunch.

All timings, except the start time, are approximate and may be adjusted to suit natural breaks in the lesson.

For public courses, your delegate fee for this course includes:

  • a copy of the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC)
  • a copy of the two User Guides:
    • NEC4: Preparing an Engineering and Construction Contract
    • NEC4: Managing an Engineering and Construction Contract

On completion of the classroom training, delegates must complete the following assessment within one month of the course completion. You will be given the exact dates via email when we have confirmed your attendance on the course.

Accreditation Assessment:

This is a multiple-choice exam.

  • The assessment consists of 58-questions, a total of 65 marks (some questions are worth up to 5 marks).
  • Questions are grouped into seven sections, each addressing one or more contract themes; some sections will have an overarching Scenario that provides a background to the questions.
  • The assessment duration is 4 hours, split into two 2-hour sittings. Sitting one needs to be completed to access sitting two. Once started the time cannot be paused.
  • You will have one attempt to pass.

The pass mark is 60%.

Delegates will receive a Certificate of Accreditation within 28 days of successfully passing the Assessment, and subject to:

  • Completing the pre-requisites, and
  • Completing all 4 classroom training days, sequentially.

The Certificate of Accreditation is valid for 5 years

At the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Confidently fulfil the duties of the ECC Project Manager in line with the contract.
  • Apply clause 10.1 and 10.2 by acting in the spirit of mutual trust and cooperation.
  • Plan and implement the key requirements at project start-up, during delivery and at project closure.
  • Anticipate and manage typical problems that arise in ECC projects and make recommendations on the corrective actions.
  • Demonstrate the behaviours and knowledge required to be an effective ECC Project Manager.

This Programme is designed for professionals who are, or will become, Project Managers on NEC4 ECC projects, and who wish to obtain the official NEC4 ECC Project Manager Accreditation (Level 3).

To be eligilble, participants must have:

  • Succesfully completed NEC4 ECC level 1 and level 2 assessment, and
  • 3 years professional experience in managing or administering NEC3/NEC4 Contracts

Pre-requisites

As part of the pre-requisite, candidates must complete and pass the level 1 and level 2 online assessments before they can attend the accreditation classroom course. To support their learning and preparation, candidates are given complimentary access to two online modules – Introduction to the ECC and Time and Programme Management.
