NEC Competency Framework

Enabling NEC professionals and practitioners to assess their competency level, help progress in their chosen NEC careers and drive successful project delivery.

NEC Competency Framework<br>

Having the right level of competencies is critical to successful NEC project delivery. To support NEC professionals in defining the right sets of skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for the various roles/parties within NEC contracts, we have created the NEC Competency Framework.

The framework has been developed by NEC specialists and tested in the field ensuring its relevance and balancing the in-depth detail with flexibility for real world scenarios. It details the values, attributes and attitudes required by all parties supporting the delivery of projects under any of form of NEC contracts.

What is the NEC Competency Framework?

This new tool for NEC users sets out a number of core competencies that are applied across various NEC contract roles. Each competency defines essential skills, experiences and outlines the necessary excellence in working behaviours. There are 3 levels for each competency:

  • Foundation (Knowledge); describes the contract knowledge components
  • Practitioner (Practice); explains required knowledge and experience of practical application
  • Specialist (Advice); defines full responsibility of contract management and provision of reasoned advice

Importantly, not all competencies, or parts of a competency, will be applicable to all NEC professionals and therefore should be interpreted in the context of the individual role or capacity under which the user carries out the work under the contract.

Why use the NEC Competency Framework?

The framework enables NEC professionals and practitioners to assess their competency level, help progress in their chosen NEC careers and drive successful project delivery. It also informs on any training and development needs, helping users build their personalised learning journey. In addition, the framework helps increase clarity around performance expectations and reinforces core working principles.

It is our aim to:

  • Instil confidence in one’s own capabilities
  • Empower project teams to deliver better outcomes
  • Inspire individuals on their career pathway
  • Embed the fundamental values of mutual trust and cooperation at the heart of everything we do
