NEC publishes new secondary option X29 to help NEC Users progress to net zero

NEC published secondary option X29 on climate change in July 2022 for all NEC4 main and main subcontract forms. It is designed to help NEC users in their drive towards achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions (see Issue 116). Released in consultative form in April 2022 (see issue 119), the final 11 versions for each contract and associated guidance notes are now available for free download from the NEC website.

The option enables clients to state their climate change requirements in the scope and provides a new climate change plan for contractors to set out their strategy for achieving the requirements.

Performance table

X29 also introduces the possibility of using a new performance table. This enables clients to set financial incentives to encourage contractors to achieve the stated performance targets. The overall aim is to help both parties reduce the impact of the works, service or supply on climate change.

According to Ian Heaphy of the NEC Contract Board, ‘Combatting climate change has to be considered at every point in the life of an asset, and needs the engagement of clients and all key members of the supply chain. To support this a version of secondary option X29 has been produced for all NEC4 main and main subcontract forms.

‘We welcome feedback on the use of secondary option X29 and are keen to support the capture and development of best practice examples and look forward to engaging with users to do this.’
