NEC projects win big at the 2021 British Construction Industry Awards

Hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel in October, NEC-procured projects were featured considerably at the 2021 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

NEC-procured projects won 7 awards, including the overall award, and JCT-procured projects won 3. Of the 7 highly commended entries, 4 were NEC, 2 were JCT and 1 was bespoke.

Award Winners

Project of the year was awarded to the UWE Engineering Building, in Bristol. The £27 million project began in 2018 using the NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) Option A. The state-of-the-art project was also awarded the Social Infrastructure Project of the Year. Despite a 3 month delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the project was completed on budget and in time for the start of the new academic year in early October 2020.

Other projects using NEC4 contracts also won at the BCIA. Using the NEC4 ECC Option B, the iconic Rochester Bridge Refurbishment won Transport Project of the Year. ECC Option C was used in the Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year, awarded to the Northern Ammunition Jetty in Argyle and Bute.

The Climate Resilience Project of the Year was awarded to the Boston Barrier Scheme. The project used the NEC3 ECC Option C contract, which was also used for the Anchorsholme Outfall Pumping Station, which won Utility Project of the Year. The National Infrastructure Commission Design Principles Award was awarded to the Replacement Pooley Bridge in Cumbria, which used both NEC3 ECC Option A as well as Option C.

Highly Commended

Using the NEC4 ECC Option A, the Hythe Range Sea Defences was the Highly Commended Climate Resilience Project of the Year. Option E was used for Dragon’s Heart Hospital in Cardiff, the Highly Commended Social Infrastructure Project of the Year.

Finally, NEC3 ECC Option C contracts were used for both the Burton on Trent Flood Risk Management Scheme, and the Hallbank Tunnel Replacement Pipeline, which were the Highly Commended Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year and Utility Project of the Year respectfully.
